How to adapt a file to make a PVC patch

You want to create a PVC patch but don't know if your file is suitable? Here's what you need to know for a perfect result without any surprises.

How to adapt a file to make a PVC patch

Creating a PVC patch is not only a matter of creativity, but also of technical functionality. PVC is a moulded material, so it has precise limitations: some graphic choices that work on screen cannot be reproduced on a real patch. Adapting the file means avoiding errors, achieving a clean result and guaranteeing readability and durability.

Forget shades, transparencies and shadows

PVC works in full colour. No shades, shadows, light effects or transparencies. Each colour will be a flat, sharp hue, separate from the others.
If your design includes gradients or realistic effects, it will need to be simplified so that the colours are distinct and well separated.
So if you decide to make a PVC patch, it will always be necessary to adapt the design in solid colours and well-defined strokes.

But... there is a catch! If you want at all costs to faithfully maintain your graphics (1) with all its nuances and intricacies, we have the solution for this too: a PVC patch plus sublimated printing!
Yes, you got it right: we can also create a hybrid that can combine the relief and three-dimensionality of PVC with the fidelity of result of sublimation printing directly on the patch.
In fact, some creations are really complex to adapt to PVC, resulting in too many small and fragmented elements (2) which is why making a patch with, for example, PVC lettering
but printing the graphics to remain faithful to the original is the best choice (3).

Evaluate the solution that you think will give you the patch of your dreams, or let our graphics team suggest the best solution based on your graphics.

Beware of details that are too small

As we have just seen, lines that are too thin, microscopic text, intricate decorations... risk not being seen at all in the final patch. The reason? During the fusion of the PVC, details that are too minute may merge, deform or simply not be legible.

>> Practical tip: avoid texts under 2.5 mm high and lines under 0.5 mm thick.

Silhouettes: yes, but with common sense

You want a shaped patch? Great idea! PVC allows customised templates, in addition to the standard ones (4) round, square, rectangular..., but with one key rule: no sharp curves or angles (6).
Too complex a template makes it difficult to cut the PVC and can create burrs. But undoubtedly a shaped patch (5) has a truly... WOW!

Use the embossing to your advantage

PVC patches can have a beautiful 3D effect, thanks to the embossed layers. This effect is great for highlighting key elements such as logos, lettering or outlines.
But be careful: the relief must be handled well. Too many layers or badly thought-out overlaps can create confusion or make the result flat and unreadable.

Who does the adaptation?

"For minor changes (e.g. thickening a line or simplifying a detail), we can let the workshop do the work directly, at no extra cost. You will be able to see a graphic layout, with all the details and finishing touches, before starting production.

However, if you need a precise graphic preview, or the file requires major changes, it is recommended that you provide a new file or purchase the graphic adaptation service.

In short: what to keep in mind

  • No shading, shadows or transparencies
  • Avoid thin lines and small text
  • Outlines yes, but simple and legible
  • Use reliefs to create depth
  • Simpler = more effective

Adapt the file to ensure that the end result is clear, readable and of high quality.
Keep in mind that adaptations required during processing may lead to increased costs.
